PathWatchers — Protecting Hampshire's Footpaths

Winchester Ramblers runs an active PathWatchers programme — a network of volunteer walkers who monitor and report on the condition of local public rights of way.

Hampshire has over 4,000 kilometres of footpaths, bridleways and byways. Our PathWatchers volunteers regularly walk their assigned sections, checking for:

All findings are reported to Hampshire County Council, who are legally responsible for maintaining the rights-of-way network.

Why it Matters

Public rights of way are precious — hard-won over centuries and essential for everyone's enjoyment of the countryside. Without regular monitoring, paths can become overgrown or obstructed, and legal rights can gradually be lost.

PathWatchers helps ensure Hampshire's paths remain open for walkers, cyclists, horse riders — and future generations.
