## PathWatchers — Protecting Hampshire's Footpaths
Winchester Ramblers runs an active **PathWatchers** programme — a network of volunteer walkers who monitor and report on the condition of local public rights of way.

Hampshire has over **4,000 kilometres** of footpaths, bridleways and byways. Our PathWatchers volunteers regularly walk their assigned sections, checking for:
- Obstructions across the path (fallen trees, locked gates, ploughed crops)
- Missing or damaged signs and waymarks
- Broken stiles, gates or bridges
- Unsafe surfaces or hazards

All findings are reported to **Hampshire County Council**, who are legally responsible for maintaining the rights-of-way network.

### Why it Matters

Public rights of way are precious — hard-won over centuries and essential for everyone's enjoyment of the countryside. Without regular monitoring, paths can become overgrown or obstructed, and legal rights can gradually be lost.

PathWatchers helps ensure Hampshire's paths remain open for walkers, cyclists, horse riders — and future generations.

### Get Involved

PathWatchers is a rewarding way to contribute to the local community while doing what you love — being out in the countryside.

**What's involved:**
- Walk your assigned section (typically once every 3–6 months)
- Note any problems on a simple report form
- Submit your report to Hampshire County Council

No special skills required. Full guidance provided.
